KitchenNook-1001

A little while back (oh say like 6mns or so ago ha!) I decided it was time to redesign our breakfast nook area.  I REALLY hated how the space was not really functional.  It also did not make the best USE of the space we have… which is a fairly generous space actually.  I am also a storage nut. Girl_Toddler_Room_Ikea_Bed_Pink_Grey-1001

Well, we did it.  We have a little girl in a big girl bed :)  We actually transitioned R. over to her toddler bed about a week before christmas.  It all started one afternoon when baby bird started crying hysterically after not sleeping for 45mins in her crib at nap time. This had been going on and off for a few weeks, but I randomly said that afternoon when I was sad she was crying – “Do you want to go and sleep in Daddy’s office bed?” and she said YES! So I told her that she wasnt allowed to get out of the bed and she could sleep in there… Low and behold, 3hrs later, she was still in the bed, all cozy and warm.   Read More »

So I am by no means a design guru… but I also feel as a homeowner and someone who enjoys learning, knowing, and doing a lot of projects in my own home (or if Im not doing them myself, Im acting as a “G.C.” in many ways).  So this topic came up today when a FB friend posted how she feels she is living in shitty kitchen hell!  While I can totally relate to having a shitty kitchen, I thankfully never had to use the one that came with this house… It was soooo nasty that I would barely even put stuff down on the counters!  So anyways after chatting back and forth.. see convo below :)

That’s so awesome. Thanks! The main problem is that the room is really crooked and the floor slanted by a lot. The entire thing needs to be gutted, then re-insulated and sheet rocked basically. Everytime someone comes to give us an estimate its really pricey and they have another idea for cabinet layout or uncovered another issue that leads us to rethink the design. Also the house is small and quirky and can’t stand (re-sale) a huge renovation. So, not only do we have a tight budget anyway but it’s being used up on unseen foundation stuff! We’re having to compromise everywhere and we don’t know what to do!!!! Lastly, we don’t really know what we want ha! all I know is I’ve been living with a crappy galley kitchen and without our plates and cups etc (still in boxes) for 7months now and I’m losing my shit!!!

You DO need to make the house safe and functional for you all to live in.. so if that means to tear out the kitchen and re do it, you should.  Yes you should make sure that you do not OVERSPEND… if you dont think the house would benefit from it in re-sale.. but also dont look at doing something like the kitchen or bathrooms as a bust, they are NOT and they WILL sell your home if they are nice, tasteful, and you dont need to go overboard to get something that looks good and nice.. also, you most likely did not buy this home with the intent to flip it and make $$$ if you plan to live there for a long time you will most likely see a return on your investment, or at least break even when you DO sell it one day… I look at all the projects we do in our home as a way to benefit our lives, yes I think they will all help if we ever sell, but I dont do anything I do just for that purpose.. or NOT do something for that matter.. I do it cause I want to. I plan to live here till Im old and gray!

AFTER!!!

OMG, I am in love with my now BEAUTIFUL fireplace!  When we originally purchased our home one of the things I HATED about our house was the fireplace and the way it took over the ONLY wall in our home that made any sense in our oddly “mushroom” shaped living room to put our TV.  Also, when you have a fireplace, you want it to be the focus of the room, not the eyesore. Hi Everyone.

MAN I have been MIA big time! well, for very good reason!  We have been chuggin’ along on the house as fast as we can so that we are in by the time our little one is here in Dec.  and we have been fortunate enough to have had some help come our way in the form on Morgan’s parents and my cousin..who spent the last week painting, assembling our PAIN-IN-THE-ASS Ikea kitchen, jimmy-rigging our beautiful stainless steel farmhouse sink, pulling  all the wood trim we already painted and replacing with new trim, having our hardwood floors installed, painting almost EVERY room in the house (we have 2 walls left in the living room) and a few more odds and ends that I think I might have forgotten along the way.  I have photos of EVERYTHING and many planned blog entries for you to see of our adventures but I just wanted to say hi and let you know Im still here, pregnant, remodeling, and moving right along.

A fool

08.26.2011

I was taken for a fool.  I have been dealing with many contractors during this remodel process and while many of them have been great to work with.. some that I KNOW I will be seeing again and happy to do more business with there is one is scamming me.. or trying to at least. :(  We need to get our backyard fixed. It is a mess… after taking out trees, putting in drains underground, pulling up big-ass rocks.. a mess! So upon another contractors rec. that we were working with we met with his friend.. a very nice seeming fellow we will call “BOB” well I gave BOB a deposit (which I had done with a few of my other contractors) HOWEVER, BOB did not show up for 3 weeks!  He brought some gravel, none of the other shipments of stone showed up.. neither did he, nor his “men” or equipement.  So after waiting patiently for 3 weeks and talking with him on the phone and listening to his excuses I decided that enough was enough and I wanted my money back so I could give someone else the job.  Someone I trusted! Well.. the day comes when he is supposed to give me the money.. he tells me he will have it on Monday (it is Friday and Im supposed to get my mulah back!)  I tell him too bad.. give me my money! He comes over with a check… little did I notice in my pregnant, upset state.. but the check was written from someone else’s account.. and not in my name, but to “cash”  FYI.. for those of you who dont know this… dont ever except a check from someone with the words “Cash” on it.. AND if you are ever trying to make sure you get your money back from someone.. it MUST be from THEIR account.. otherwise, the person who’s name is on the check is now responsible!  OH, and the check was post-dated to today!  So today comes, I go to the bank that the check is from… ask them if the funds are available… NOPE, there are not enough funds in the account I have a check from!  So I contact “BOB” and let him know Im getting the police involved… he then tells me he will give me cash tomorrow… do we believe him. NO! So my mom and I take a ride to the address he gave me for his home address… well there he is sitting on his front step chillin’.  He sees us.. and offers to give us some of the money today.. we take it a weak $500 of my MUCH larger amount due back to me.  WELL… Lets see if he shows tomorrow with the rest (or at least more)  I made sure to tell him that I will come back every day until I am paid back the amount due to me!  MANY I WAS A FOOL!  I just dont understand, why are people so dishonest and creepy!  I am so sad and frustrated with this experience.  I understand that times are hard.. but wouldnt you think that would give someone reason to do good by the person, since it will transpire into MORE work?

Has anything like this happened to anyone and if so, how did you handle it and get your $ back?  Thanks for listening!

We recently had the house painted… it went from being a drab “Army barrack” brown to a beautiful blue-grey with black and white accents and trim!  Dan, our painter (who’s info I will update you with shortly) did a great job and painted it all himself, by hand to make sure the job was done right!  We wanted the house to have a more modern feel, not blend right in with landscape and I think this did the trick!  Just look at the amazing before and afters!
